Want A Better Sex Life? Start Doing Kegel Exercises

We love to talk about pelvic floor strengthening and all the benefits it brings and today we are going to talking about the benefits of a stronger pelvic floor and Kegels on your sex life and sexual satisfaction. I think it’s important to note that Kegels are not a magic ticket to better sex and that improving your sex life can take a bit of work. Improving your confidence and better communication are just 2 things that you can do to give your sexual satisfaction a boost.

Kegels and a stronger pelvic floor can absolutely help reignite a lost flame or stoke the fire but they can't automatically solve every concern or stumbling block you may have. The most important thing is to be open with yourself and your partner. Reading this and you’re unsure on exactly what a pelvic floor is or what Kegels are? Let’s go back to basics to start with…

What is the pelvic floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that runs from the front of the pelvis to the tailbone and coccyx at the back. The pelvic floor looks like and acts like a hammock, holding up the pelvic organs (the bladder, bowel and uterus).

There are openings in the hammock for different parts of your anatomy to pass through. In women the 3 openings are the urethra, the vagina and the anus and the pelvic floor wraps firmly around them.

What are Kegels?

Developed by Californian Gynaecologist Dr Arnold Kegel, Kegels are exercises which are clinically proven as an effective nonsurgical treatment for pelvic floor weakness. They consist of repeatedly contracting and relaxing the muscles that form part of the pelvic floor.

How to do Kegels

The easiest way to describe how to locate your pelvic floor and then do Kegel exercises is to imagine you’re holding in wee and wind at the same time. Follow these steps and you'll be on the road to Kegel success in no time.

  • Sit on a firm chair or lie down with your knees slightly apart.

  • Tighten the ring of muscle around your back passage (anus) as though preventing a bowel movement or wind escape.

  • Then imagine you have to stop yourself passing urine.

  • Tighten the muscles around your front passages.

  • Now squeeze and pull up both areas (front and back passages) towards your belly button.

  • Hold for as many seconds as you can (up to a maximum of 10 seconds) but please remember to not hold your breath.

  • Relax the contraction and rest for 5 seconds. Relaxing your pelvic floor is equally important.

  • Repeat this 'squeeze and lift' sequence 10 times.

Now for the fun part! If you do your Kegels consistently you will almost certainly notice a difference. Those who do daily pelvic floor exercises report better sexual arousal, heightening sensitivity and better ability to orgasm after just a few months of daily exercise. Kegels increase the circulation to the pelvic floor which improves arousal and helps aid lubrication.

During orgasm, there's a rush of blood flow to the pelvic floor and then a series of muscular contractions. The stronger your pelvic floor is, the stronger these muscular contractions are and the better the orgasm. Consistent Kegels also build muscle tone in the vagina meaning it can stretch more while you’re having sex. This is more stimulating for your muscles and nerves, all leading to great sex!

Those with a weak pelvic floor and pelvic floor dysfunction also suffer with mental symptoms too. Lack of confidence, embarrassment or pain means sex is the last thing on the cards for many women. Strengthening your pelvic floor through Kegels can improve or even treat these physical symptoms when done consistently and correctly. With these symptoms eased, you can be in a much better headspace with more confidence and open to new experiences. Something else to consider is that your body may work perfectly fine but if you are not in the right space mentally then sex can quickly can become a chore.

Performing Kegels on a daily basis can put you back in touch with your own body and help you to reconnect on a sexual level. Adding in pelvic floor strengthening products like our Secret Whispers Kegel Weights can boost your sexual confidence by putting you back in touch with your body and adding some oomph to your Kegels.
